BB King Blues Session

Music Over Medium
I actually haven't seen this DVD, so i must defer to others who complain about the quality of the audio capture. As for the video quality, please - it's about the music. I originally saw this show in the '80s, on cable, and have been looking for it ever since. I haven't seen anyone else who mentioned that the session featured Bill Wyman on bass and Charlie Watts on drums (as in the Rolling Stones rhythm section). I don't really remember Phil Collins at all (not really sure he was there), and if Billy Ocean appeared, it was only as a brief featured number, not in an actual jamming performance, and certainly not the "main act". And, Stevie Ray pretty much only played rhythm guitar to back up Eric, watching him trade licks with BB (I think Eric backed off a little, which was understandable, given that BB was not in his prime any more, and it was, after all, BB's show). And, Paul Butterfield (yes, in his last recorded performance) seemed to be whaling away a lot more than we heard in the mix, which, yes, was not the best that one could have hoped. But, please folks, let's remember that some of the earlier Motown stuff sounded like it was produced in a can, but we still love that music. That's what we're talking about here. The all-star "band" (really, knowing who all is playing is just like being a kid in a candy store) really does deliver, within the constraints of the format. As for the female vocal performances, "Bad Etta" James is up first, and she really "tears it up", with a great performance. Then, Gladys Knight (regrettably, Pip-less) gives what has to be one of her best performances - at any rate, it sounds wonderful, and she appears to know she nailed it, because she looks absolutely radiant. But then, Chaka Khan gets up for her number... and starts out - I don't know, but to me, a little slurred - and she is absolutely phemomenal, unbelievable! Then, later, when all three women get into a "cutting contest", trading vocal licks in turn, it's really not much of a contest, to me - Chaka eats them alive, and, in my imagination, at least, it seems like the other women know it; their faces say they'll do their best, but they seemed to be in awe (as was I). So, who knows if it's just me - but you'll be able to decide for yourself, after you see it. I am SO glad to have finally found this.

It's a recorded TV show
Big fan of the whole range of the blues, but slightly disappointed with this. It all sounded "middle-of-the-road". Still, if the thought of EC, SRV, two Kings, Butterfield, Gladys Knight, and Etta James appearing quickens your pulse, the "Sessions" is worth adding to any of those collections.

Good Show .

AMAZING!!!!!
Don't listen to the people complaning about the quality. Quality music is all that's important and this DVD has it. Etta James and Dr. John's rendition of i'd rather go blind is is worth the price alone. Add in Godess Gladys and the Blues Boy himself and you get more than what you paid for! Only dissappointment for me was Chaka Khan who could have flew with the birds she was so high! She probably didn't even know she was on stage! But that didn't ruin it for me. I just got it and I watch everyday God bless everyone who was on that stage......even Chaka she tried!

All the best in the business together
I ordered this for my husband, who is a die-hard blues fan, and this video was a dream come true for him. All the best in the business together, rockin', doing what they love, making awesome music. It's a party that you really wish you went to. So much fun!

At least it's available
The original concert was televised in early 1987 and was pure magic. Sadly my VCR version died from age. At least this copy is viewable and until someone can clean up the video and audio it's good enough.

Great Blues DVD
This DVD is a must have for blues lovers. There were some reviewers here that claimed that this DVD's picture was not clear and that it looked more like it was transferred from a VHS tape. I don't agree. It was as clear as you would expect any DVD to be and the show is wonderful.

Great show but poor recording quality
That's what it is. But I already knew it before I bought. So you should know it too. However, for those who love the Blues it is a must have! Even aware of the quality I bought it and I am very happy with it!

Music was good but unfortunately video quality was so or so as the video was taken so long ago when quality was no where near that of today's video.

Worth the price
Copied from a late eighties tv show B.B. hosted. Guests include Eric Clapton, Dr.John, Albert King, Stevie Ray; Phil Collins, Paul Butterfield, Billy Ocean!, Chaka Khan!, Gladys Knight and Etta James. Some memorable performances. Dr.John and Etta doing I Would Rather Go Blind is worth the price alone. How Chaka stayed on her feet has always been a puzzle to me. She looks stoned out of her gourd, but still she comes across for her part. Stevie Ray and Albert King doing The Sky Is Crying...great. A piece of history here.
